New Holland Apts Renovation

Wolf Lake, IL
Sustainable Design, LEED, NC Gold Level

The renovated New Holland Apartments was one of the first LEED-certified buildings in east central Illinois. The renovated facility is centrally located in downtown Danville, within a few blocks of the federal courthouse and numerous businesses. The Holland Apartment building will provide a safe and supportive living environment for clients of CROSSPOINT Human Services. CROSSPOINT clients can be described as persons experiencing emotional, familial, or marital stress or more severe acute or chronic psychiatric disabilities. Other clients experience development delays or disabilities. The vision of CROSSPOINT is that all people should have every opportunity to realize their potential for a productive and healthy life in their community. The mission of CROSSPOINT is to provide quality human services in a competent and reliable fashion to individual families and the community.

The completed Holland Apartment building has received appreciable national exposure. In regard to this renovation of the Holland Apartment building, Michael Jackson at the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency said that "...there is a strong possibility this could be the first project in America to receive both certification [LEED certification and 'tax act' certification of historic status]." Jackson also stated that the other contenders are questionable preservation projects, ie they mostly involve new construction with the preservation as a small component of the project. The renovation of the Holland Apartment building is a true preservation project.

The technical innovation of the project is the integration of cutting edge technology, a commercial grade Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) system within an historic building. In addition to the GSHP system, the building received new replacement windows on the two facades not facing public streets.
